Masters Class: GI Joe

Image
Yo Joe! Here at the Masters Class we have been focusing a lot on styles and themes of action figure photography. While this has been highly beneficial, sometimes it is nice to take a step back and focus on specific characters or lines of characters in action figure form. Animals, space men, cowboys, babies, and super heroes have always been some of the most popular things in toy form to entertain children. The child inside every single action figure photographer has not forgotten this. While our toys may have become less about play and more about collecting, less about the immersion into imagination and more about nostalgic escape, we all still have our favored animal, baby, or super hero.  For as long as there has been action figure photography, there has been badass GI Joe shots. Duke, Cobra Commander and their respective sides pitched in a never ending plastic war. Today on the Masters Class we have two amazing artist here to give you all the tips and tricks of shooting G...

Masters Class: Crossover Calamity

At the Masters Class we’ve been covering a lot of topics. Toy lines, genres, themes, and photography basics that have served help us here in the community to create some stellar action figure photography.   However when you think about what all goes into a shot, one of things that we have been remiss in including to get you there, is concept.  Most of us can agree that in order to have a great action figure photography shot, the one ingredient that trumps them all is the IDEA behind the shot. After all, would you serve dinner without setting out the plates first?  Well fear not, because today we have an Extra Credit course of the Masters Class that will help you take your shot from concept to masterful art. We have two of the most talented artists in the action figure photography game here to give you a break down of how they start with a concept, and bring you a piece of art that will be sure to have your heads spinning.  We would like to introduce @toy.fathe...

Masters Class: Lighting

One of the most crucial elements of action figure photography is the proper use of lighting. Too little or too much can break a shot, and it often requires a degree of patience in experimenting with angles and positions until it is just right.  Well here at the Masters Class, the main goal is to provide tips and tricks on the process from the Masters of the craft. Whether the topic be figure based, theme or genre, or styles of shots; the Masters are here to help everyone to grow and learn in the community.  Todays Masters Class will be the first class to focus less on the characters, and less on the theme or genre. Today we will turn the spotlight (no pun intended) on lighting your shot. And here in the class to do that for us today are two extraordinary artists that have mastered the process of lighting. Please welcome @No.Chewing and @Lights.Camera.Actionfigures to the Classroom, and take your seats and dim the lights, because Class is now in session.  What is you...

Masters Class: Marvel Legends

The child inside every single action figure photographer has not forgotten this. While our toys may have become less about play and more about collecting, less about the immersion into imagination and more about nostalgic escape, we all still have our favored animal, baby, or super hero.  In the early 2000s we saw our first iteration of Marvel Legends. Toy Biz released a wave of three heroes and one villain (Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man, and Toad). These releases were an attempt to piggy back off the success of the Spider-Man Classics toy line. Build a figure parts became a mainstay, ...
